My hero

I look up to different people at different times, for different reasons.  My hero today though is Dawn Krantz-Watts.  She is my hero because of who she is, what she does, and why she does it.  Dawn is a woman of integrity, and deep caring.  

My hero got some very difficult news yesterday, about something that occurred over the weekend.  I think you should read about it yourself.

What did you do for someone else today?

Well today was a snow day.  Major ice in Tulsa, so no surveillance.  Had some phone calls, did some work at the home office nothing too major.

I did introduce several friends to one another.  Helped some people out with things they needed, all from my home office.  Things that took little effort, but will likely help some people out by a fair margin.  I did it at no charge. 

Sometimes things that are very easy for you, can make a huge difference in someone else's lives.  The things I did today was very simple for me to do.  I am glad I had the time to do them.

I am not telling you this to toot my own horn.  I just want you to ask your self what can you do to help someone else.  It may be the simplest thing in the world.  Whatever it is, or however it is, give something of yourself. 

Feeling a little overwhelmed

Since I have started blogging some interesting things have occurred.  More than I could have expected. 

I have been able to connect with more people on a more personal level.  Not just people I know from online, but people I meet in person.  My perspective of the world has broadened.  My perspecive of people in Tulsa has become clearer.  I find something within my self coming alive.  Something I didn't fully know was there.

The simple act of writing, and opening my self to people has made me more open.  Has made me more accepting.  Has made me more considerate. 

It has seemed to have the same effect on some others as well.  I am getting constant reinforcement from new and old friends.  I get e-mails or other forms of communications ever day from people showing appreciation for things I am saying or doing.

I know this post seems mushy.  That is, because it is.  I feel overwhelmed with emotion, in a very good and positive way.

Thank you for allowing me to connect with you my readers.  Your time is valuable.  For you to take time to read what I have to say means a great deal to me.  To those that subscribe, I hope I can hold your interest.

I know this post is a little silly, but I have a point.  You become the things or people you allow to influence you.  So choose wisely.  Read blogs and books that reflect the person you want to be. 

Be a free thinker

Today is Martin Luther King Day.  Tomorrow we inaugurate a new president.  This is a new world.

Doesn't matter if you like the changes, or if you don't.  Fact is they are here. You can learn to adapt, or not.

I don't know what color you are, and I don't care.  I don't know what religion you are, and I don't care.  I don't know what country you was born in,  and I don't care.  I don't know what political party you belong to, and I don't care.  All I care about is the person you are, and the person you strive to be.

Were ever you come from, is not what matters.  What matters is who you are, and where you are going.  Be a free thinker.  Think for yourself.  Question everything. Learn something every day.  Learn from yourself, learn from others, learn from books.  Then take what you learn, and think about it.  Does it make sense?  If not, make sense of it.  Think for yourself.

Learn to think for your self.  Be a better person.  Be a better friend.  This world is changing.  Change with it.  Change for the better. 

We are all in this world together.  Let's behave like it. 

If you hang out with bad people.....

If  you hang out with bad people, chances are you are also a bad person.  If you aren't, you are likely to become one. 

Our friends influence us.  If you have friends that are great people, chances are they will make you a better person.  Choose friends that reflect the person you want to be.

You should also chose the books you read, and the music you listen to with the same criteria.  Positive books and music, and you will more likely be a positive person.  Works the other way too.

So what kind of person do you want to be?

Can social media save a small business?

Tonight I saw a blog post that asked if social media could save a small business.  The business is a deli.

For those that don't know what social media is:

Wikipedia say this: Social media are primarily Internet- and mobile-based tools for sharing and discussing information among human beings.

Examples are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Here is my response to that question:

Social media is a great long term investment. An investment in relationships. Relationships take time to build. If he needs a quick save, social media probably won’t do it. If he is in it for the long haul, I think social media will help him for years to come. That is if his food is great, his service is better, and he can genuinely connect with people with a honest concern for their needs.

Now that I think of it, those are the same principles he needs whether he uses social media or not.

Be a master of your own emotions

What a title for a blog post.  "Be a master of your own emotions".   Think about that.  Are you a master of your own emotions.  Are you happy every day?  Sad every day?  Always ready to take on the world?  Of course you aren't.  We all have moods.  Me included.

So why would I post such a headline? 

Because I think it should be something we should all strive for.  Imagine being a master of your emotions.  Imagine being able to function at the same level even on bad days. 

There is a great quote that illustrates a perfect example of mastering your emotions

If you know the point of balance, you can settle the details. If you can settle the details, you can stop running around. Your mind will become calm. If your mind becomes calm, you can think in front of a tiger. If you can think in front of a tiger, you will surely succeed.

The Thing about Goals

Having goals is a pain in the neck.

If you don't have a goal (a corporate goal, a market share goal, a personal career goal, an athletic goal...) then you can just do your best. You can take what comes. You can reprioritize on a regular basis. If you don't have a goal, you never have to worry about missing it. If you don't have a goal you don't need nearly as many excuses, either.

Not having a goal lets you make a ruckus, or have more fun, or spend time doing what matters right now, which is, after all, the moment in which you are living.

The thing about goals is that living without them is a lot more fun, in the short run.

It seems to me, though, that the people who get things done, who lead, who grow and who make an impact... those people have goals.

What we don't know, can't help us

I resisted learning about Squidoo.  I heard about it a dozen times in books by Seth Godin.  I just never checked it out.  Well a couple of days ago, I did.  I love it. Awesome.  Squidoo.com 

I resisted learning anything about Twitter.  Everything I knew about it lead me to believe it was something for teenage kids to keep in touch with.  I am sure it would be great for that.  Turns out though that some people I have long respected use it.  I finally signed up, and I think it will be a great tool.

Makes me wonder what else I know a little about, but am resisting learning more.  What else am I missing?  Is there a food I should taste?  A place I should visit?  Software I should try? 

I have had 0 interest in Facebook.  Tony Goring of South Africa just let me know he got a Facebook page.  I respect him a lot.  Maybe I need to open my mind up to that.

I never thought I was close minded.  Maybe I am.  Are you? 

I am going to try and be more open minded.  More open to change.  More open to trying new things.  I'll let you know how that works out.
